PREPARE TO WATCH THE LARGEST BIG SCREEN EVER:
OUR WONDERFUL SKY...

The Lyrids Meteor shower is set to be visible in our Earthly skies the night of April 21st this year. There's no moon, clear skies, warmer weather, and it's a SATURDAY!

The LYRIDS METEOR SHOWER
http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/earthskys-meteor-shower-guide
The Lyrid meteors – April’s “shooting stars” – tend to be bright and often leave trails. About 10-20 meteors per hour at peak can be expected. Plus, the Lyrids are known for uncommon surges that can sometimes bring the rate up to 100 per hour.
This shower will probably rain down the most meteors in the dark hours before dawn on Sunday, April 22. You might want to watch between midnight and dawn. Why? It’s because that’s when the star Vega – the shower’s radiant point –rises above your local horizon.
Vega climbs upward through the night from the north east, starting at 9 or 10pm. The higher Vega climbs into the sky, the more meteors that you are likely to see. By midnight, Vega is high enough that meteors radiating from her direction streak across your sky. Just before dawn, Vega and the radiant point shine high overhead.

WEATHER FORECAST
We had cloudy rainy skies the last four weekends. This is a sign that this event was meant to be:

NOTHING BUT CLEAR SKIES AND WARM WEATHER!
AND ONLY ABOUT 4-6 MPH WINDS
THE CAMPOUT
The best place to view a meteor shower is as far away from city lights as possible. One of the best places to witness this event is at the El Mirage Dry Lake in Adelanto.

El Mirage Dry Lake is located in the high desert, over the mountains right past Victorville. It is a vast 24,000 acre desert, far enough away from city lights.
The drive is about 1.8 hours from Los Angeles

We will be camping out all night long! There are no labeled camp sites here, so please read the following information on what to do and how to find us.

Don't forget the the option to car camp if you don't have a tent or don't feel like setting one up

It is expected to be around 91 degrees in the daytime and 56 degrees at night. Prepare yourselves.

FIREWOOD

STUFF TO DO
Explore the desert trails in the daytime
Race your cars
Race your motorized toys
We will have music, lights, and speakers
BBQ!

Also the chance to experiment with some light graffiti since it will be DARK!

LET'S ENJOY OURSELVES AND LET THE METEOR SHOWERS ENTERTAIN ALL NIGHT LONG
SEE YOU THERE!
Just a thought but we might want to consider reducing visual noise as much as possible when observing meteor shower. :)
Could we have a carpool list like the Big Bear event?
good idea, if i figure out how to steal their spreadsheet outline i will do that
do you know when is the latest to get into the park? planning to leave in the afternoon
You can arrive any time of the day or night. After 4pm the visitor center closes but there is a parking permit kiosk there where you can get your $15 vehicle permit. There are no lights but you should be able to see our camp out in the distance, once you are in the park, there is no designated roads so drive slowly :)
I have a 6 on 6 flag football set with cones that I'll bring. We can have a game while buzzed on beer and stink a little after cuz there's no shower facilities!!! Lol!
Yen: just like how you stole my girlfriend and apple juice while i was trying to steal your girlfriend?
Andrew are you bringing a grill? John is bringing a small round grill, prob can cook only 10-15 hot dogs at a time, a tri-tip is coming your way David since people were animals at Big Bear and devoured it all before you knew it was even cooking ;)
We are responsible for our own food right? Even though there will be other food available to share? Cus I'm only bringing the steaks for my master David. Everyone else will be eating hot dogs. LOL
ahhh... you girls are well-trained. Naomi with tri-tip on a fork to the right, Sy with steak on my left... you girls are doing good, keep it up. :D
Naomi. Is the small grill enough? I suppose its same size as the one in Schabarum. I suppose it is. I can bring charcoal. what do u think?
Our round grill is probably 3/4 the size of the one at Schabarum. It should be fine for us all night long but if anyone else has a grill please bring! I just sent out a checklist with info on BBQing. I don't know about bugs but I do plan to bring bug spray and maybe some citronella candles
David don't forget that John will be feeding you two hamburgers with each foot
Andrew don't worry about bringing a grill, the charcoal is more important, please bring :)
I got charcoal and firewood...
@Andrew: You bringing filipino bbq style meat?... =)
The numerous times i've gone there werent any mosquitoes, but thats when it was dry. There may be mosquitoes out there due to the large amount of rain fall it got last weekend.
It is! we used to take our trucks there and romp through the mud. Got stopped by the rangers numerous times for being on the lake bed when wet. ahhh the good ole days when we were young and could get away with being an idiot!
Have fun guys! be safe. Cant make it anymore =(
hey David! ILR ILR ILR! lol
Sorry I need to get up early for skydiving in San Diego! :) Have fun guys/gals!
anyone bringing music? like a boombox or speakers? the meteor shower starts around midnight til early dawn so we need something to keep the party...
We are going to set up lights and music like we did at big bear, our party comes every where we go
are you bringing the strip pole too? :D John said that you guys are bringing like 500 glowsticks....are we gonna have 1 of these too? :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evCLd6hN6ps![]()
Ultra Circle!!! :D
we can all crack our fire glowsticks together at the height of the meteor shower to celebrate! :D star-watchers will be so blinded that it will take them an hour for their blackout in vision to adjust......end of meteor shower, everyone go home. haha :D
If anyone needs a ride up, I plan to head up around 5-6 from the OC, but I will be leaving in the middle of the night...around 1-2 am since I have work in the morning.
We had a little hiccup with our trailer, but we should be there around 4pm.
We'll be there after 6pm... Sleeping Beauty is in a deep sleep and I'm not sure if this story has a happy ending. Hopefully, she'll be up within an hour and it will be a happy ending...that's if make it to El Mirage before the sun goes down ;)
Only the outskirts of the lake bed are open. continue driving straight up on mountain view Rd after you buy your parking pass.
Zero your odometer, at 1.2 miles on the right you will pass bathrooms 6 & 7. Keep driving straight
Sorry, zero your odometer once the paved road turns to dirt, THEN pass the 6 & 7 bathroom at 1.2 miles
thanks everyone for coming out! I was watching the news yesterday, apparently a meteor blew at 8am sunday morning while we were at the dry lake and was supposedly visible in the sky. They said that Sunday night and tonight is supposed to be the peak of the Lyrids. A day late, tragic.. but hope next time will be better
yay! I was there (last minute-instant decision) but forgot to RSVP. =P
It was an awesome experience... thou so dead tired and sore from the mud run... I'm glad I went! =)
alright so who's got the sound system? I'll bring glowsticks... let's do this! :)
