Oh.. Mische Mokwa, it was love at first "hike." This is by far my most beloved hike. It is the most beautiful trail I have ever set my foot on. Let me rephrase that, Mische Mokwa trail is one of the most beautiful and enduring hike in all of Southern California until I visit Yosemite, Havasupai and the Grand Canyon. The first time I set foot on this hike was really early in the morning, it was before the sun gets the chance to burn off the marine layer. Hiking this early in the morning offers you a very MYSTICAL yet MAGICAL experience. You're enveloped in the clouds as you hike and when you get to Sandstone Peak you'll be looking down to an ocean of clouds below you. Its AMAZING, its like you're on top of Mount Olympia from the mythology... Great Picture Moment! The Highlights of our hike include the spectacular Echo Cliffs where rock climbers ascend shear cliffs, a house sized boulder delicately balanced on a small rock beneath, a giant split rock where kids can dash between the sheer walls, stunning giant sandstone formations, and breathtaking views from the top of Sandstone Peak and Inspiration point. My heart swells up just remembering how gorgeous this hike was. The Mishe Mokwa Trail to Sandstone Peak loop hike is a "must do" hike in the Los Angeles area.
The trail is located in the Santa Monica Mountains north of Malibu. This moderate loop hike is about 7.75 miles total. It takes about 3.5-4 hours to do the entire hike, including getting up to the top of Sandstone Peak, the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains. The elevation gain for the hike is about 1,500 ft. The hike is relatively easy the only difficult part is the first half mile as we ascend to Sandstone Peak and the rest of the hike is a flat out even trail. There are amazing vistas of sandstone peaks, distant views of the valleys and cities to the north and east, and amazing views of the Pacific Ocean to the south and west. As you are basically above everything else around you for many miles, you have fantastic 360 degree views of the entire area.
PACK YOUR LUNCH:
Remember to pack your lunch and a liter of water for this hike. Take the opportunity to pickup your lunch at Lee's Sandwich across the street from the Alhambra Bowling Center or at our Rendezvous Point at Carl's Jr.
Carpool Location:
I know its really early in the morning, but in order for us to Experience a Hike in the Cloud this has to be a very early hike before the sun gets the chance to burn off the marine layer. We will also do another hike in the early spring as a sunset hike in Mishe Mokwa so keep an eye out for that event too.
6:45am to CARPOOL @ Alhambra Bowling Center:
1400 E Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91801
Manny people have gotten lost countless number of times trying to find the parking lot to the trailhead... its because its hidden. To make sure we don't lose anyone we will rendezvous again at Carl's Jr to wait for everyone to catchup that we lost on the freeway and then Caravan together up to the parking location of the trailhead. If you don't want to carpool with us at ABC you could meet us at Starbucks (address below) to Caravan with us to the parking lot of the trailhead.
7:45 am Caravan Location @ Starbucks Parking Lot:

Arrive early and join me in a cup of joe.

Hey Joe... it is GORGEOUS! I can't wait to go back on this trail again. You'll really love this hike.
FYI organizers, that Carl's Jr. lot is very small. If everyone shows up it might be a problem for the cars and the angry business owners. The Sprouts supermarket just across the street over Westlake Blvd. (1012 S Westlake Blvd, Thousand Oaks, CA) is much larger and more convenient. Thanks.
Ah the hike we couldn't finish due to the extreme heat. Looking forward to finishing it this time around.
Happy Sunday Entourage, our Morning Glory Hike in the Clouds of Mishe Mokwa in Santa Monica Mountains is coming up this Saturday and I hope all of you are as excited as I am! This is going to be a very beautiful hike to remember with many breathtaking vistas and spectacular views of the valley. I'm working on a location for grub afterwards and more details will follow later this week. Thanks you for signing up and looking forward to hiking with all of you. Have a Great Week!
I am new to this group. Are we carpooling at abc at 7am on Sat??
I think it's the same spot as the hiking event last Sunday... if it is, then it's easy to get lost and there's no cell reception to get a hold of anybody... I highly recommend carpooling and doing the caravan as suggested by our fearless and mighty organizer =) .. the parking area is big but it gets full easily... I can't wait to look down on top of the clouds!...
Any OCers want to carpool? In north OC, there's a Rite Aid parking lot on Beach and Rosecrans.
Does this place have an address? Or do we just all meet at Carl's Jr then caravan?
Hi Everyone, Saturday could not come any sooner and I can't wait to revisit my favorite Hike on the Mishe Mokwa Trail! Hope you all are just as excited as I am! I updated the information for this hike so please check your email or come check out the Mishe Mokwa page for the details. Thank you Ken for the heads up on the parking we have now relocated our meetup point to Starbucks please see your email for information. @B Laise, the parking lot of the trailhead does not have an address.
I will be meeting up for carpool from the bowling alley. Who do I contact in case I need to reach someone? phone #?
If anyone is interested in carpooling please meetup at ABC at 6:15am sharp. I know it's early but we need to beat the marine layer from burning off by the sun. You should leave ABC for our meetup point no later then 630am to make it there on time. I personally will not be there at ABC so each of you have to orchestrate you own rideshare
This is a great place for a hike. Last time I was here was a few years ago so it's about time for another trip back there.
susan, there are 2 of us coming from irvine. anyone else from oc? is there a place close to the 5 fwy to meet?
Hi Joanne, when I was there with my friends they brought their dog and I noticed other hikers brought theirs too. So I think its ok as long as they're on a leash.
Bob, you guys can meet me at the Beach & Rosecrans intersection - it's not far from the 5 fwy.
GPS failed us. Winding roads for 2 hours made us sick. Spending the day at Getty villa. Next time! :-)
Finished hiking since noon-ish. Waiting at Starbucks for group lunch. Let us know if the main group is going straight to lunch from hike. Thanks!
We're going to stonefire grills:
3635 East Thousand Oaks Boulevard
Thousand Oaks? CA? 91362
United States
We're at Famous Dave's next to Starbucks for the Lunch Special, it a really good deal!
Lynna I enjoyed the hike too, but the winding roads also made me sick and I was the one driving =P I have been here before don't remember it being like that. It's a good trail and would go back, the drive though is something I'm not looking forward to.
I uploaded a little clip in youtube in case you're interested... I haven't checked the link yet bec I'm at work (muahahahah!)... it's in highdef, the resolution is based on the speed of your connection... I checked it using my cell and it looks pretty sharp... http://youtu.be/6_PEeC0yVQs![]()
Awesome time! We'll have to join for the next one. Posted several pics and a small write up on my blog-- http://resident.la/?p=792![]()
This trail looks GORGEOUS!!
